Chateau Fougas Maldoror  Millésime 2006

Chateau Fougas Maldoror  Millésime 2005

TASTED Summer 2007- (MY TOP PICKS) : Immensely dark purple colour, the nose has a lot of young dark fruits, spices and also some eathly mineral notes, the palate has a nice structure with ripe tannins and a good freshness, elegant and a very long aftertaste

Robert Parker - April 2006
Quickly becoming my favourite Côtes de Bourg estate, Fougas-Maldoror’s gorgeous 2005 reveals notes of chocolate, sweet cherry jam, smoke and barbecue spice; medium to full-bodied, ripe and fleshy, it will offer beautiful drinking over the next decade.
Score : 89-91/100

Jean-Christophe Estève - Primeur 2005
The reputation of Jean-Yves Béchet’s  Côtes de Bourg has spread well beyond the region. This is due to the remarkable work which is carried out in the vineyard and during the maturation of the wine in oak barrels. All of the credit is due to him. This year more than ever Fougas is one of the best wines in its category. It has a nose of great intensity with red fruits, jammy, cherries, wood and vanilla. The taste is fleshy and sensuous with a satin texture. Toasted wood is always present but it its embraced by the fruit.
Score : 16.5/20

Jacques Dupont - Le Point Mai 2006
Tasted twice. At the first, the wine was very closed with full woody flavours. At the second, three weeks later the tannins had begun to appear leaving one to imagine what will follow. With a very tight structure, at this stage this is a wine which is seriously close to dry. It has strong potential for ageing.
Score : 15/20

Jean Marc Quarin - April 2006
Beautiful intense and lively colour. A clean, pure, fresh, fruity and liquorice nose. In the mouth it is pleasant, bright and fruity.
Score : 16/20

Robert Parker - June 2006
The deep ruby/purple tinged 2004 Fougas Maldoror exhibits ripe tannin as well as attractive notes of fudge intermixed with black cherries and currants. It is medium bodied, elegant and silky enough to be drunk upon release and over the next 5-6 years.
Score : 87-88/100

HachetteGuide de Vins 2007
This vintage did not gain the coup de coeur as did the 2001 and 2003 vintages but the 2004 came very close to this. It is true that the vines here benefit from an exceptionally varied subsoil. The proprietor sells a part of the harvest in an original way: each year one hundred and fifty persons are involved in the harvesting of «their wine» acquired by the rental of the wine stocks. The 2004 is superb with a bouquet of fresh black fruits, flavours of wood and vanilla and well constructed savours of tannins and chocolate. A classic and complete Côtes de Bourg, already good but will improve over the next fifteen years.
Score : CoolCool

La Revue du Vins de France - June 2005
The bouquet is still very woody, while the palate is much fruitier and more elegant.
We liked this wine

Carnets de dégustation de la Revue du Vins de France - April 2005
After a dark garnet colour and a nose of ivy, the taste presents strikingly dense and slightly rough tannins, despite having a quite beautiful depth. This is not the last word. This wine is worthy of further consideration with greater maturity.
Score : 7/10

Le Point - June 2005
The nose has red fruits mingled with cinnamon. The woodiness is better controlled than before, allowing the aromas to appear. The taste is round with good quality tannins, silky but closed which will evolve more prominently later. Sufficiently dry. An enjoyable wine to store.
Score : 16.5/20

Le Monde Supplémnt Vin - Juin 2005
Certainly this Côtes de Bourg has a good balance of strength and freshness. Full bodied, vigorous, with tannins but not harsh..The fresh taste persists long in the mouth.
Score : 14.5/20

Le Monde Guide du Vin Betrane  & Desseauve
This is a wine with a deep ruby colour with garnet highlights. Beautifully brilliant. The nose is fine and complex, with hints of cloves and of roasting which harmoniously mix the fruity aromas of cherries, morello cherries, plums and blueberries. The taste is also suave and complex; a sensation of freshness, aromas of cherries and blueberries dominate. Finally, hints of grilled coffee and mocha take over and prolong the taste. The tannins are silky despite the youth of the wine. Well made, very well balanced, a little young but will improve with age.
Score : 18.25/20

Patricia Delayre-Guery - August 2006
The nose is marked by vanilla, a strong taste which will require patience for the wine  to mature.
Score : 14/20

Chateau Fougas Maldoror Millésime 2003

Decanter Wold Wine Awards 2007 Bronze Medal

Robert Parker - April 2004
One of, if not the best estate in the Côtes de Bourg has produced a superb Château Fougas Maldoror 2003 which may not have the quality of 1998, 2000 or 2001, but is most successful all the same. With its plum-ruby color, scents of melted chocolate and mild cherries (kirsch), rich, medium body and clean, elegant finish, this wine will be most enjoyable for 3 or 4 years.
Score : 86-88/100

Robert Parker- May 2005
A big, sweet, chocolaty nose includes notions of expresso roast, black cherries and a hint of truffles. This opulent full-bodied, impeccably well-made, chewy 2003 is ideal for drinking over the next 6 – 7 years.
Score : 86 to 88/100

Hachette Guide de Vins - 2006
This year it is the main wine that wins a Coup de Coeur for this regular achiever. This is a great wine with a deep Bordeaux colour. The aromas combine ripe berries and vanilla merrain. The palate is tactile and fleshy, backed up by powerful yet elegant tannins. In a couple of years this bottle will cope with all and any situations on the table.
Score :  CoolCoolCool coup de coeur

La Revue du Vins de France - April 2006 & June 2004
A very fine wine, full, generous , long-lasting and smooth, with a fine, elegant hint of wood. Lovely style. Superbly developed nose, palate still very woody but offering a fleshy , smooth, silky texture. We liked this a lot

Very deep crimson. Sweet, intense nose with a slightly charred quality. Pretty good with a certain freshness. It’s low on tannins.
Score : 15/20

A nose of black berries; blackberries, blackcurrants with subtle and elegant hints of new wood. The taste is very silky, fresh, fruity, well constructed with a final flavour of tannins.

Hachette Guide de Vins 2005
This vintage which pays homage to Lautréamont (Les Chants de Maldoror) is never able to be indifferent. But that is not the only literary reference. For it has in the previous vintages received four «Coup de Coeur». The next is not far away.  It has a remarkable intensity and persistence, it competes well with the Libournais wines: very ripe merlot, toasted oak. It has great potential over the Next 5 to 6 years.
Score : CoolCool

La Revue du Vins de France - June 2003
The nose is dominated by new wood, with a rich deep flavour expressing beautiful fruit, ripe grapes and firm tannins.
Great potential.

La Revue du Vins de France - December 2004
A deep colour with tints of garnet. The nose has developed with charm and fine woody notes and fruit which is refined and profound. The taste reveals a complex wine, velvety, and with remarkably silky tannins expressed through first class very ripe fruit.

Carnets de dégustation de la Revue du Vin de France - December 2004
The vineyard has been the sole occupant of its site for two centuries. The Maldoror vintage of Chateau Fougas was introduced in 1993 using new oak barrels and principally merlot grapes. The wine has an impressive dark colour and an intense and very spicy nose with a strong presence of paprika. The initial taste is very ample and fat and the after taste is quite rich. The beautiful qualities of this wine must be stressed as well as its smoothness. What a brilliant technique it exhibits.

Carnets de dégustaion Bettane & Desseauve - April 2003
The wine has a deep colour with hints of garnet. The nose is pleasant with fine woody notes and deep and refined fruit. The taste reveals a complex wine, smooth, with remarkable silky tannins expressed with excellent ripe fruit. Here is a major success of the region.
Score : 8.5/10

Jean-Christope Estève - June 2003
Beautiful garnet colour. A sensuous and open nose of blackcurrants and toasted wood. A rich and unctuous wine with a suave taste, creamy texture and ample tannin. Very well made with great class.
Score: 16 to 16.5/20

Gault Millau Magazine - June/July 2003
The wine is dense and compact; superb, full of expression.
Score : 89 to 90/100

Guide Gilbert et Gaillard 2006
The wine has an intense colour with purple hints. The nose has ripe fruits and spices (pepper and roasted coffee). The taste is well constructed and offers great substance, infused with tannins and finally aromatic fruits and lingering spices.
Score : 87/100

Thuries Gastronomie Magazine - January 2005
Visually the wine is without fault with an intense colour, it has developed pleasant aromas of ripe fruits enhanced with a note of unusual smokiness. With lots of panache, such as the taste which oscillates between freshness and intensity followed by a central roundness and a sufficiently individual taste which together bring out its best.

Chateau Fougas Maldoror Millésime 2001

Robert Parker - June 2004
This is one of the finest wines of the Côtes de Bourg. A sleeper of the vintage, it is a worthy successor to the wonderful 2000. The deep ruby/purple colored 2001 offers an enthralling bouquet of melted fudge, roasted coffee, black cherry jam, earth and spice. Beautifully textured, heady, rich and hedonistic, it is a delicious Côtes de Bourg to drink over the next 5-6 years.
Score : 90/100

Hachette Guide de Vins 2004
This may be Jean-Yves Béchet’s main wine representing two-thirds of his output, but that does not prevent it being of a very high standard. The panel lavished praise on this 2001 with its sumptuous black colour with ruby tints and its extremely expressive bouquet; overripe grapes, grilled almonds, vanilla and toasted oak. Fleshy and powerful on the palate well structured with silky tannins. In four or five years, this wine will be ideal served with a leg of venison.
Score : CoolCool (coup de coeur)

La Revue du Vins deFrance- December 2003
A big success: a lovely deep colour, an intense bouquet with nuances bordering on truffle, firm tannins, good body and lots of flavour. Robust and fresh at the same time, this wine boasts good balance.
